Title: Shift of Shadow and Soul
Series: Soul Shifter #1
Author: Hilary Thompson
Published by: Star Shadow Books
Published Date: May 22, 2017
Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal
Synopsis via Goodreads:
There are three kinds of magic in the world, and Corentine has the wrong one.
Long ago, the Restless King forced Corentine’s people into hiding as he scoured their blood for the SoulShifter. When Corentine learns she possesses some of the forbidden Shifter magic, she must hide her power or risk the same death her twin suffered.
Raised to trust no-one, she rejects the General’s son Sy, until she realizes his family secrets might be the key to unlocking hers. When his brother turns against them, they are forced to fight family to save what’s left of their home, or accept banishment to find a new future.
If Coren and Sy can’t convince their people to accept the light of Shifter magic, the growing Shadow will ruin everyone’s chance of freedom.
Travel this richly imagined world with a diverse cast that readers have compared to fantasy favorites like Sarah J Maas and Leigh Bardugo.

When dark meets light, will all become Shadow?

The boy leaned closer. Coren risked another glance at his
face, expecting to find the widened pupils, the swollen lips of desire and
anticipation.
But it was worse than that.
He stared at her intently, gray-blue eyes narrowed and full
lips slightly upturned in conquest.
Claim them with a
kiss. The hunt’s opening speech echoed in her mind.
He pulled her closer, and she stopped moving entirely, going
limp. Playing dead. He thought this was a game, like all the others did.
Then she allowed her lips turn up in a grim smile. It
certainly was a game. The boy just didn’t realize that her rules were
different, and he was about to lose.
Her tongue reached into the cavity of her cheek and
retrieved the plump goshen berry hidden there. As his lips neared, Coren broke
the berry against her teeth, bracing for the instant burn. Then, tongue
searing, she shoved the pulp past his opened lips, preventing the claim.
He burst away, the shock of the acidic berry sending him
stumbling backward, swiping drool from his slack jaw.
And she ran, darting around him and ignoring the pain and
the blisters that were already bubbling and popping on her tongue and lips.
Reaching the cliff, she hazarded a glance over her shoulder. He was tougher
than expected, for he was crossing the plain too, moving quickly through the
sandy grass.
“Stop!” he yelled hoarsely. Strangely, he was grinning
widely, lips blackened with goshen juice and bright blood. Coren had no more
ground left, but out of curiosity, she paused to watch as he approached. He
walked softly now, as though she were a beast he was cornering. Perhaps he was
a real hunter, after all.
Even so, the berries had stopped him, making the kiss
forfeit. She could claim he hadn’t actually caught her.
“So…goshen berries?” he asked, wiping away more blood with
the hem of his white shirt. “I must be the first hunter ever to receive that
treatment.”
Coren’s brain nagged at her to escape, but something in his
grin made her ask. “Why the first?”
“Because surely no one has ever caught you before. And I
can’t imagine another girl willing to martyr her own lips just to avoid a small
kiss.”
He was very close now: not quite near enough to grab her,
but mere steps from it. She stepped back carefully, heels nearly hanging off
the edge of the cliff.
“Nothing is small when it is against your will.” She watched
his eyes widen as he processed the words, and then she bent her knees and
pushed away from the earth, arcing back and out into the void, then straight as
an arrow toward the water below. His shout was erased by the wind rushing past
her ears, and then the water closed over her head with a crash.
Under the surface of the sun-warmed water, Coren
somersaulted quickly and reversed directions. She surfaced only to locate the
face of the cliff and gulp a breath, and she didn’t dare look up to see if he
had spotted her. Ducking back under the waves, she stroked hard against the
current, finally feeling rock. Her lungs throbbed as her head bobbed up again,
but she was safely inside the hidden sanctuary.

IN A RACE AGAINST TIME, HOW DO YOU KEEP THOSE YOU LOVE SAFE?
Jenny Kramer knows she isn’t normal. After all, not everybody can see the past lives of people around them. When she befriends Ben Daulton, resident new boy, the pair stumbles on an old music box with instructions for “mesmerization” and discover they may have more in common than they thought.
Like a past life.
Using the instructions in the music box, Ben and Jenny share a dream that transports them to Romanov Russia and leads them to believe they have been there together before. But they weren’t alone. Nikolai, the mysterious young man Jenny has been seeing in her own dreams was there, too. When Nikolai appears next door, Jenny is forced to acknowledge that he has traveled through time and space to find her. Doing so means he has defied the laws of time, and the Order, an ominous organization tasked with keeping people in the correct time, is determined to send him back. While Ben, Jenny and Nikolai race against the clock -- and the Order -- the trio discovers a link that joins them in life -- and beyond death.

Arabella Holmes was born different and raised different. After it became apparent she wouldn’t fit the role of a proper 1900′s lady, her father, Sherlock, called in some lingering favors, and landed her a position at the Mutter Museum. The museum was Arabella’s dream; she was to become a purveyor of abnormal science. What her father called a BoneSeeker.
Henry Watson arrives at the Mutter Museum with a double assignment–to become a finder of abnormal antiquities and to watch over and keep Arabella Holmes. An easy task, if he could only get her to speak to him instead of throwing knives in his general direction.
But this is no time for child’s play. The two teens are assigned to a most secret exploration, when the hand of a Nephilim is unearthed in upstate New York. Soon, Arabella and Henry are caught in a fight for their lives as scientific debate swirls around them. Are the bones from a Neanderthal … or are they living proof of fallen angels, who supposedly mated with humans according to ancient scrolls?
Sent to recover the skeleton, they discover they are the second team to have been deployed and the entire first team is dead. And now they must trust their instincts and rely on one another in order to survive and uncover the truth.

“This was a fantastic historical romance, with a huge mystery to solve (and in true Holmes/Watson style!)… with some amazing twists and turns along the way. – Desiree - Reviewer
“The settings are intriguing and the way they are described make you feel as if you are immersed in the story. I could feel the gloom and damp. That is rare in so many books! Boneseeker is a book I highly recommend, and I give it 5 stars!” – Christy - Christy's Cozy Corners

Book Blitz: Junior Inquisitor by Lincoln Farish
Junior Inquisitor by Lincoln Farish
Genre: Dark Urban Fiction / Horror
Published by: Smashwords Edition on March 1st 2015
Goodreads
Brother Sebastian is halfway up a mountain in Vermont, hell-bent on interrogating an old woman in ashack, when he gets the order to abandon his quest for personal vengeance. He has to find a missing Inquisitor, or, more likely, his remains. He’s reluctant, to say the least. Not only will he have to stop chasing the best potential lead he’s had in years, this job—his first solo mission—will mean setting foot in the grubby black hole of Providence, Rhode Island. And, somehow, it only gets worse…
If he’d known he would end up ass deep in witches, werewolves, and ogres, and that this mission would jeopardize not only his sanity but also his immortal soul, he never would’ve answered the damn phone.
Excerpt:
I took another step into the shop, pushing against the waves of evil. On the next set of shelves, I saw a severed hand in a large clear jar. The hand of a slain witch contains the knowledge of the deceased. The possessor then has that knowledge, all her spells and tricks. It’s one of the reasons witches were burned years ago...
A flash of movement from the other side of the room caught my eye. Two handmade Raggedy Ann style dolls were each held fast to the counter by a small black iron chain. The dolls were sitting slumped, as though alive and waiting for release. High-pitched, girlish voices came from them, full of hate, malice, and insanity. A sign in front of them said they were Hogaana Dolls.
A summoned spirit—a soul called from Hell—can be captured and enslaved by a strong or skilled witch. Trapped between here and Hell, the spirit can act as an oracle and tutor—a guide for witches trying to learn and experience new levels of power and what I’d call madness but she would refer to as “clear thinking” or “a deeper understanding.” The drawback is that a spirit is still ethereal and can escape easily unless tightly contained and constantly fed power to keep it here. The bound spirit can be transferred into a vessel to contain it in a form, a body...
My hands were shaking, my stomach roiled, and my eyes stung from the candles and incense. I wanted to flee...
I needed to leave and report back. This was beyond my abilities.
When I looked up, a tall, thin woman was staring at me from behind the counter. Her gray hair grew in clumps between patches of gnarled burn scars. She was dressed in a tight jumpsuit, stained with blood. Rings covered her hands, and I saw the deep purple of porphyrite in one.
Her face had an odd twist to it, as though someone had taken a screw, driven it into her nose, and turned it. She was a Screwface—a witch who thrived on pain and torture. A witch I wasn’t capable of breaking, or even dealing with. And now it was too late for me to escape.
Only a very special type of Inquisitor—a man without empathy, one who would be called a sociopath in the regular world—could deal with them. Formed into teams called Hammers, they’re elite, but they die even faster than regular Inquisitors. Not only do they train longer and harder than my regular Brethren, they receive special instruction on how to deal with Screwfaces. And despite all this training and conditioning, they’re still sometimes reduced to a pitiful weeping mess after one of their Purges.
Her smile reeked of madness and pain.
One of the dolls moved and shrilled, “Make it bleed.”
She glanced at it then raised the hand with the porphyrite ring, which was glowing and snapping in a purple and black nimbus. She was unleashing some spell; only magic was that mind-bending color. “Goodbye, false monk.”

Excerpt:
A smattering of raindrops cut my ruminations short. I studied the angry gray clouds just as thunder rumbled. I decided running for the keep would be better than waiting the storm out in the shelter of the maze tower. I gathered my skirts up and ran for the opening in the nearest hedge. Even running so hard my lungs burned and my legs ached, the downpour beat me to the shelter of the vargar keep.
Normally safe footing became treacherous in the sudden rush of water. Puddles and slick slate pavers slowed me more. Once gaining the half-open undercroft door, I plunged into the underbelly of the castle and pushed the heavy door closed behind me. Not bothering to check the corridor, I began wringing out my heavy rain-soaked skirt.
“Greetings, Lady Elsa?”
I jumped. It took all of my control not to cry out in surprise at the sound of the male voice. I lifted my head to find Lord Dentin standing not three feet away. He looked like he had just returned from a swim. Water coursed down his face and dripped from his clothes into a growing puddle on the stone floor. A partially dry wool blanket draped his shoulders. His hair, black with moisture, stuck out from his head at odd angles as though he had paused mid rub.
Yet, his eyes were bright and a twitch pulled at his mouth. “It is good to know I wasn't the only one caught in the sudden downpour.”
Suddenly realizing I was holding my dress up and exposing quite a bit of leg, I dropped my skirts. The slap of them hitting the wet floor echoed down the corridor. I flinched.
His eyebrows rose and an actual smile pulled at his mouth. It took years off his face, revealing the remnants of the mischievous rascal he must have been in boyhood.
“Don’t look so frightened. I won’t tell on you.”
Anger gripped my chest and my chin rose instinctively. “I doubt my mother would care, my lord. She has grown calloused in her despair of me. I beg pardon. I didn't see you there.
His smile disappeared and his expression grew thoughtful. “I am a bit hard to miss.”
“True, my lord. I need to proceed to my rooms now and change.”
“By all means. I would not wish you to grow ill. I anticipate an animated conversation at the evening meal.” He stepped back a bit, offering half the narrow hall for me to pass.
I gathered my skirts, keeping the edge just above the floor this time, and stepped through the gap. Then straightening my back and shoulders, I strode down the corridor to the servant’s staircase.
“Wait.”
I paused instinctively, but I didn't turn around. He approached, his boots making squelching sounds on the stone.
“Have this.” He wrapped the wool blanket around my shoulders without actually touching me. It smelled of smoke, rain, and dog, but his residual warmth radiated from it. The heat felt heavenly on my chilled skin. “You need it more than I do.”
Then before I could voice my gratitude, he strode toward the kitchen calling for someone named Reginald.
“Thank you,” I whispered. Clutching the fabric to me, I dropped the pretense of dignity and ran for the stairs. If I was caught in this state of dress, my mother would never let me out of her sight again.
